Brandon Walker 3/28/18 Paper #3: Pre-writing materials I feel as if before I start writing an expository paper I need to have the following items: A solid understanding my selected text and its effects as a stand-alone piece A solid understanding of why the text desires me and I desire it (more can be discovered while writing but a foundation is necessary) A plan for the ideas I will separate into paragraphs throughout the paper. Details that make the text what it is as a whole How the text currently affects others and the potential it has in different scenarios A rough idea of my final thought which will cleanly wrap up the idea of this text that I’ve been setting up.

Brandon Walker 26 March 2018 ENG 101 Which format do I prefer? I prefer to write another exploratory essay because I enjoy the freeform exploration of diving into a topic I either want to better my knowledge in or an unfamiliar topic I’d like to discover. While writing essay 1 I felt like the ideas fell onto the paper easier and they were also more concise and authentic. Which format would be better to strengthen my skills? It may be more beneficial for me to write another expository essay because I feel as if I struggled more with this format. I believe I can solve this by keeping an expository mindset in the back of my head when writing so that I can practice having this mindset as well. Which one would be easier to write about something cool? I believe I can come up with better ideas while writing an exploratory essay because I don’t have to argue a specific topic. It feels more like an exercise of discovery rather than an argument backed by various point...

I think this is an exploratory essay because it is exploring the current nature of the kids and interesting things about them Social media has gone cold. Constant critics. A kid smiles and the media questions their grief instead of praising them for their strength Parents shocked by their kids having to go to schools scared. One instance of a daughter saying she knows the best hiding places in school. This essay is trying to shine light on a sub-issue within a larger issue that is not being given enough attention Use of stories: the story of Annabelle gives personal insight of the trauma Teachers are traumatized too

Brandon, Montrell, and Duncan March 22, 2018 ENG 101 Coates Outline Coates uses a balance between storytelling and statistics to properly educate people on a topic that existed in history and continues to exist today; Racism in America. The Story of Clyde Ross : “ Between 1882 and 1968, more black people were lynched in Mississippi than in any other state.” Ross grew up in Mississippi and he had a rough childhood. African Americans growing up in the south usually had to suffer hard labor. His family worked on a farm and only made about 5 cents per pound of cotton. Once Ross was old enough, he was stationed in the military in california and found he could go into stores and not be harassed. Brandon Walker 26 March 2018 ENG 101 Longreads response: Are the Teens All Right? I chose to read the Longreads article entitled Are the Teens All Right?. This article explores the current condition of teenagers who have been affected by the tragedy of the Parkland shooting. This is an issue that struck home to me as it is a tragedy in which I personally felt connected to for reasons I haven’t yet been able to decipher. More so than any other personal tragedy or public tragedy witnessed in the past. The article talks about how the amount of devastation the students of the school are feeling along with their strength and ability to speak with confidence and control on the subject is rather amazing. A part that stuck out to me is the student who spoke publicly about their demand for actual change rather than the plethora of “thoughts and prayers” being delivered. Brandon Walker 26 March 2018 ENG 101 Coates Response This piece was created to draw attention to an existent topic that’s been existent for some time and been treated in many ways but has never reached a true solution or significant change; racism in America. Coates backs up his information with engaging storytelling about people who have experienced and are experiencing this issue. Storytelling allows for the reader to understand the issue on a more personal level and is a great way to grab an audience. Coates also backs his argument with statistics later in the piece which is necessary for an article of this caliber. The statistics give the reader a more educational viewpoint of the issue and with cold hard facts. I believe that Coates is very effective in his writing an provides for an engaging, informative, and surprising read. He provides the reader with a series of different emotions which will greatly affect the way a reader takes away the information and what they do...

Brandon Walker Anna DeWitt ENG 101 2 March 2018 Wallace Response This article is a great example of a solid and in depth exploratory essay. In this essay Wallace delves into the topic of lobsters. This topic grabs my attention because, truth be told, the thought lobsters do not cross my mind very often at all. Wallace talks about Maine Lobster Festival and uses it as his model to explore how society views and treats lobsters. He spends time talking about the history and background info on the creature itself and it gives the reader a deeper understanding, especially if the reader is like me and does not know a thing about the topic. This allows the reader to go into the essay with a better grasp of the topic instead of trying to relate to and understand a topic they know nothing about.
